The Institute of Psychotherapy and Social Studies was founded in 1978 to provide training in individual psychotherapy. Within our psychoanalytic approach, we recognise the diverse nature of society and the need to address the social, political and cultural contexts that affect the individual.
The selection of staff, psychotherapists-in-training, and potential patients/clients is governed by our comprehensive Equal Opportunities Policy, which is monitored by the Council (see below).
We offer training courses in psychotherapy for suitably qualified candidates who want to develop an understanding of psychoanalytic theory and practice, in particular the personal and object relations approaches, and to integrate these with an awareness of the social context. In accordance with our Equal Opportunities Policy, we welcome applications for training from all sections of society.
The Institute is a founder member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP); our members are registered in the Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic (PP) section of that body. IPSS psychotherapists practise throughout London, the Midlands and Southern England. We have a few members practising overseas. The Institute has a written Code of Ethics and Practice to which all members and trainees are required to adhere.
We welcome applications for membership from suitably qualified psychoanalytic psychotherapists already registered with the PP section of UKCP, who would appreciate our ethos of social responsibility. Write to Chair of IPSS, Endeavour House, 11 Genotin Terrace, Enfield, EN1 2AF, UK.
IPSS hosts an occasional conference, generally on themes relating to Psychotherapy in a social and political context.
IPSS is governed by Council. It consists of staff members, graduate members, the chairs of the various IPSS committees and elected student representatives. Council policy is implemented through the various committees. The Training Committee is responsible to Council for the training programme, acceptance of candidates, supervision and monitoring of trainees’ academic and clinical progress. The Executive Committee is responsible for the overall administration of the organisation. The Ethics Committee continuously monitors good practice and considers any complaints or grievances should they arise. There is also a Continuing Professional Development Committee and a Finance Committee. The Conference Organising Committee is not represented on Council.
