Our Referral Service will help you get in touch with your nearest IPSS psychotherapist. Details of the service can be found below, and you can browse by region using the list on the left. To learn more about psychotherapy and its benefits, see our article What is Psychotherapy?
IPSS has psychotherapists in the following areas of the UK:
We welcome direct self-referrals. We also take referrals from psychiatrists, GPs, health professsionals and other agencies such as industry and education. All referrals, discussions and sessions are strictly confidential.
If you prefer to telephone our Referral Service contact the IPSS Administrator on 0845 271 3303 .
You will be able to leave a message with your details to be sent the IPSS register of qualified IPSS therapists or choose to speak to the referrals co-ordinator, a qualified therapist who will help you to find a suitable therapist. Issues such as convenient location and fees will be discussed.
Qualified therapists have their own rates and some therapists offer a sliding scale of fees. An initial consultation is used to discuss the client’s difficulties and establishes whether both parties feel that they can work together. Fees and frequency are also discussed at the initial consultation.
Meetings with a therapist will be once, twice or three times a week. More frequency allows issues to be explored at greater depth. Therapy requires regularity and commitment from both client and therapist.
IPSS regrets that we are only very occasionally able to offer limited low-cost therapy. If this is through its supervised trainees it involves an initial assessment interview, for which a fee of £25 will be charged. Unfortunately very few low-cost places are currently available, and it may be necessary for you to seek therapy or counselling though your GP or other agency.
