Institute of Psychotherapy & Social Studies

Contextualizing psychoanalytic psychotherapy within contemporary cultures, languages and social identities

Introductory Course

A three week ‘taster’ experience of studying with IPSS

Our NEW three week taster course was last run in March 2010.  Dates for the next one will be posted here so do check back from time to time if you are interested.

The taster course includes the opportunity to discuss aspects of studying Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and to talk with our Director of Studies, Sue Sünkel. Taster Course students will also be invited to attend relevant IPSS Clinical Seminar(s).

Our March course included an exploration of loss and grief as it presents in psychotherapeutic practice, facilitated by Maggie Rogers (Chair of Training). Loss and grief are particular ways in which clients can become stuck in their work and can also lead to numerous repetitions.

Rob Frazer (HAGM therapist and IPSS graduate) facilitated a session on substance abuse, first briefly defining what is meant by ’substance abuse’ by grouping and describing the various substances (depressants, stimulants etc.) and their common effects and presentations. He covered the various theories for why people become substance abusers, such as the ’stepping stone’ theory, learnt behaviour models and theories about ‘addictive personalities’. This moved the discussion to its main focus, namely that for a large majority of substance abusing clients the abuse is a symptom of a deeper emotional trauma that needs to be worked through in therapy.

Rob’s work do with substance abusing clients at HAGAM is only for 12 to 15 sessions, so he discussed his direct experience using a time limited approach, and how he feels that ultimately open ended psychoanalytic psychotherapy is necessary to effect lasting change in this client group.

An Application Form for the next taster course in PDF format will be posted here in due course. In the meantime, feel free to email the Administrator with any queries.
